Lung Transplant Centres In Canada.....

Canada is not a newcomer to lung transplants.  It was at the Toronto General Hospital that the world's first lung transplant occurred in 1983.  They also performed the first double lung transplant in 1986.

From 1983-2002, more than 1,300 lung transplants have been performed.

According to data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) website, "the 3 year survival rate has jumped to a range now from between 67 - 75%."   Additionally, In 2002, 4.3 transplants per million population were performed in Canada, compared to 3.6 in the US. In comparison, other organs were transplanted less frequently in Canada."

To view the above statistics and for more information, visit the

Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). (2003). Lung Transplantation in Canada: A Close-up Look.

Currently there are five lung transplant centres in Canada.

Meet

Meet Melody Pierson... when we first added her to our site she was awaiting a double lung transplant.  She felt it would be the summer (2007) or fall when her turn comes.
