Do You Have a Lung Transplant Question for Melody?

Hello,

My name is Melody Pierson. I am 50-years-old and struggled with COPD most of my life. Early onset of Asthma began at the age of 4. It continued and was compounded by early onset of Emphysema at approximately age 40. Unfortunately,  I smoked for many years but did quit 5 years ago.

As a broadcast journalist, singer and avid equestrian, I stayed in relatively good shape. However, my lung disease (COPD) began to progress rapidly 5 years ago. I was put on oxygen and eventually was listed for  a double-lung transplant when my lung function dropped to 17%.

I am happy to say that 6 months post-transplant,  my lung function is actually 107%. I can breathe again without the aid of inhalers or oxygen. This is not to say I do not remember vividly, every single moment I had to struggle to breathe. My heart reaches out to all those who suffer in this way. With that said, I do know number of ways to live with this illness and make the best of every breath you take. It is my sincere wish to help anyone, in any way I can.

Should you be interested in the idea of lung transplantation, types of exercise, foods or any other aspect of what you may help you lead a better life in dealing with COPD, I am happy to share my experiences with you. Keep in mind, my experiences do not compare to the advice of your doctors. Indeed, I strongly urge you to consult with your GP and Pulmonoligist first and foremost.

As I would tell my children as they grew up, "You are unique...like everyone else".

Enjoy life and let's make every breath count.

Melody Pierson,  Montreal, Quebec, Canada
